About Therapy and About Jennifer

Therapy

I provide psychotherapy to adults experiencing a variety of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, difficulties with life transitions and adjustments, sleep issues, and stress. We can work together to create change if you have: frequent thoughts of self-criticism, perfectionism, unworthiness, or judgment from others, or other thoughts that leave you anxious or depressed and that interfere with your daily life.

Together in session, we explore your emotions and thoughts with compassion and curiosity. We use cognitive and behavioral techniques to consider new ways of doing and thinking to help you transform the way you live and feel about your life. There are numerous types of psychotherapy. I mostly practice from a cognitive and behavioral (CBT) perspective where we collaborate and focus on what’s troubling you now.

More about CBT

CBT is based on the theory that a situation alone does not determine our feelings and behaviors–our thoughts about a situation determine our emotional responses and behaviors. So, changing thoughts will change the way we feel and behave. Because our minds work fast to navigate our reality in the moment, we operate on many thoughts and their underlying assumptions without our full awareness and consideration. In CBT we slow this process down to notice and examine one thought at a time, non-judgmentally, to investigate its underlying assumptions and utility.

I draw from a combination of cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT). This includes  TEAM-CBT, and influences from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). My approach uses weekly surveys to check in about how you’re doing, and a commitment to practicing various cognitive or behavioral methods that you learn in session, outside of session (aka- therapy homework).

Therapy Sessions

I have a standard session time of 45-50 minutes, typically on a weekly basis. The total number of sessions varies depending on your individual needs and therapy goals. I will check in regularly with you about how therapy is going, and invite feedback.

I offer a 15-20 minute free consultation prior to scheduling a first session so that we can see whether we are a good mutual fit for working together.
